Comerica Park home of Detroit Tigers [MAP]

I have  recently become quite a baseball fan, and have gone to several games this year at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers.  As anyone who has ever gone to any professional sporting event can tell you, it gets expensive in a hurry.     So I decieded to try an experiment and see how cheaply I could take in a game and still enjoy myself.

When the Tigers built Comerica they make a commitment to the fans that they would always offer blocks of inexpensive seats, so that people would not be priced out of coming to the ball park.  The Tigers offer their $5 seats, which are in section 345 in the end upper decks by the first base foul pole.  Not the greatest seats in the world, but I don’t think there is really a bad seat in Comerica.  While you are up, you are still close enough to see what is going on, and I like the upper decks as it gives me an overall view of the field.   So, that being said when I tried to order the tickets none were available, after some poking around on the Internet it says that they sell out this section quickly.  Since I was buying tickets for a game 2 days later this really didn’t surprise me.   I ended up buying seats in section 216 for $15 each (plus service fee).  I picked a Sunday game.  Every Sunday is kids day and you get free rides on the Carsoul and Ferris Wheel ($2 value) and kids get to run the bases after the game.

So we had our tickets, next step was parking.   I have parked at various places for games, but it always seems to end up costing $20 regardless of where I am.  Keeping with the theme Tigers offer $5 parking which is way west of the Stadium, and I didn’t feel like dealing with all of that.  So I parked at the Port Atwater Parking Garage Which is next to the Ren Cen  (If you are coming down Jefferson, turn right on Beaubien and it is the first garage on the left , look for the big red sign).  This garage is $3/hr, BUT on weekends the max rate is $6.  Park on the 3rd level and take the walkway to the Ren Cen, then to to the 2nd level of the Ren Cen to take the People Mover to the game.   The People Mover is $0.50 each per person each ride, for for me and the 2 kids this added $3 to my parking, still a great deal!   Take the people mover to Grand Circus Park stop and you are about 2 blocks from the Stadium.  This brings you to Gate B, which is also where the Will Call windows are.  Since I bought my tickets a few days before the game, I selected the free ‘pick up at Will Call’ option rather than paying extra to print the tickets at home.  This worked out great, as I walked right up and showed my ID and confirmation and got my tickets.

Continuing the $5 deal, they also offer Kids value meals with a hot dog, chips juice box and toy for $5, and the adult meal with hot dog, chips and soft drink.   So we got 3 of those and headed to our seats.   We were in row 21, which I found out was 1 row from the top of the stadium.  Still decent seats and we enjoyed a Tiger win!    While the $5 deals were great, we did buy a few other things during the game, bag of peanuts, a couple of pops, popcorn and pretzel….

So the total damage is as follows:

$58.50 Tickets 3x$15 + $13.50 service fee
$ 3.00 6 x People Mover tokens
$15.00 3x value meals
$ 1.00 Score Card
$ 8.00  Peanuts, Pop
$12.25 Popcorn, Pretzel, Pop
$ 6.00 Parking

TOTAL Cost $103.75 for 3 people, plus gas to and from Detroit.   Not too bad for a full afternoon of entertainment.  The Tigers also run a deal for the week night games 4 tickets, plus value meals for $55,

not sure where the seats are, but as I said there are really not any bad seats there.  Note the parking garage is $12 during the week.. so it would be $20 for 4 people, about the same as close to the ball park, but one nice thing about parking there is you avoid a lot of the Stadium traffic!

For more info on the Tigers $5 deals, and to purchase tickets please go to http://mlb.mlb.com/det/ticketing/deals_5.jsp

One last money saving tip, you are allowed to bring in a small cooler with (sealed) water bottles  into the stadium.

Detroit Marriott

For a recent trip to Detroit to see a Wings game, we decided we would stay in town after the game rather than heading home.  We selected the Marriott at Renaissance Center because it was on the People Mover line and also because I have always wanted to stay there.

The Renaissance Center was built in the late 70′s by Henry Ford II as a rebirth for Detroit.  The center tower is the hotel, which is now run by Marriott it is the tallest all-hotel skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere.
We arrived Friday night and I dropped off my wife at the front door (which is actually on the side).  I can’t comment on the check in process, but by the time I parked the car and walked into the hotel I met my wife in the lobby who was all checked in.  Our room was on the 53 floor.  Because the building is circular the room is slightly wedge shaped.  There is floor to ceiling windows that gave us a view of Windsor Canada, and Jefferson Ave, as well as a view of the 300 tower just out our window.  The room was nice with 2 comfortable double beds, the room had a desk and TV.
The Ren cen is a world unto itself.  There is a food court in the basement with fast food.  There are several restaurants within the hotel.  There are various shops on the first 2 levels of the hotel, as well as a movie theater.  There is also a People Mover stop, so it is easy to get to over destinations downtown.   Near the walkway to the PM station is a (new) CVS pharmacy.  There is a new riverwalk that runs along the Detroit River, just walk through the glassed in Winter garden to walk outside along the river and view Canada.
The main entrance to the building off Jefferson has several GM cars in the lobby and if you follow them along to the side there is a cool scale model of downtown Detroit.

A word about parking…. The hotel offers Valet service ($25/day), but I am not a fan.  There is a parking structure just across the street from the hotel that charges $20 a day.. BUT if you drive to the other side of the complex you can park in the City owned Port Atwater ramp.  It is $12/day for weekdays, but only $6/day for weekends… what a GREAT deal.  The parking ramp is attached to the Ren Cen by a walkway, just park on the 3rd level and follow the signs.
Over all this was an very enjoyable experience.  The only drawbacks were the hotel did not include breakfast, but we walked downstairs and eat at the food court.  They charge $12.95 for Internet… WTF?  what is the deal with the higher-end hotels charging for Internet… everyplace else in the world is free.. they are doing it because people will pay… well I won’t.  At $139 this was more expensive than comparable places downtown, I selected it because the PM stop was in the building and because I had always wanted to stay there.  For other cool looking places in Detroit I have not stayed at but look promising check out the Hilton Garden, or the new Double Tree at the renovated Fort Shelby Hotel.

Red Line – Chicago

This is a nice hotel, the rooms are fairly large, with a wet bar and 4 tables and chair for eating.  The hotel includes a great breakfast with made to order eggs or omlets, and a good selection.  In the evening they have the Manager Receiptions, with free drinks and snacks.  The hotel also features a pool and spa, although both were COLD, they also have a small work out room.  The one big drawback to this hotel is NO FREE internet… they wanted $10 for 24 hours…. Really?  In this day an age?  I guess they figure people will pay for it so they charge it… I guess I am too cheap.. I used my phone and was able to get by, but it did detract from my overall enjoyment.

I enjoy Modern art and this is a cool museum.  The building itself has a nice IMAG0292open and modern feel.  The permanent exhibits are interesting, and as an added bonus there was a Buckminister Fuller show going on.   The back of the building looks out over a lawn to the Lake Michigan.

They don’t have a huge collection, so an hour is plenty here.  If you like modern art it is worth the trip, if you don’t have a preference the Art Museum is a probably a better bet.

Grocery Shopping – River North Chicago

We are trying to eat out less, so for this trip we wanted to look into eating in. As I mentioned in the previous post the Hampton has nice kitchen and eating area. So we found 2 stores within a few blocks walking distance.

  • Jewel-Osco 550 N State St Chicago (State @ Grand) This is a typical grocery store, but being in the center of the city there is an emphasis on ready to eat and small portion foods. Also carry beer/wine/liquor. You can also purchase 1 or 3 day CTA passes from the customer service counter.
  • Trader Joe 44 E. Ontario Chicago (between Rush & Wabash). This is a specialty grocery store… we didn’t actually go here.. well we went there but they don’t open until 10am..so they were not open when we arrived. I have heard good things about them, so probably worth a look.

  • 7-11 There are several locations within a few blocks. Good place to pick up drinks or a snack.
  • 451 N State St (@ Hubbard 1 bk S of IL),
  • 645 N State (just North of Ohio)

Red Line to Chicago, 1 block South, 1 block West

This is a nice hotel, we stayed here over New Years as well. Large rooms with full sized fridge, stove, dishwasher and plates/silverware/pans. There is also a kitchen table with 4 chairs, so it is ideal if you want to eat in. The hotel also has nice pool/Jacuzzi/sauna and exercise room. It is near the Red Line subway stop and their rates are pretty affordable. It seemed like the perfect hotel. Unfortunately it is also right next to a fire station. So you hear the trucks leaving at all hours of the night and day. It doesn’t bother me and I slept fine, but my wife had trouble sleeping. If you are a heavy sleeper this place is great, if you are a light sleeper you might want to look elsewhere.

Hampton Inn Chelsea – New York City

Hampton Inn Chelsea
108 West 24th Street, New York, New York, USA 10011
In the past when we have visited NYC we have stayed at the Belevedere Hotel on 48th and 8th, and have been very pleased with it.  For this trip we wanted to stay in a different area of the city.  My wife found this hotel in Chelsea which was a great rate (under $200 a night) and included breakfast!   Since the shuttle service we used last time didn’t service this area, we took a taxi from LGA which will run you $30 – $35 for fare (including tolls, but not including tip).   The hotel was in a great location, with all the major subway lines within a few blocks, so you can get anywhere.   We arrived at 9am on Saturday, and obviously our room was not ready yet, but was all set when we returned at 4pm.  The room had 2 beds and desk, TV, not huge, but not tiny, by NY standards this was a nice sized room.  The window over looked the city and from the 18th floor where we were we had a nice view.

View from 18th floor of Hampton Inn Chelsea

They also had free wi-fi which worked great.. most hotels offer internet now, but getting it to work can sometimes be a challenge, so I was pleasantly surprised when I connected to the wireless without problems.

Breakfast was the standard Hampton Inn…. hot and cold items with the hot item changing each day.  Over all I am very pleased with the breakfast at Hampton, and so far I have been delighted with the rooms.  This is our 3rd stay at a Hampton this year, each in a different state.  The rooms were all different, but each gave the same level of service and comfort.  I highly recommend them based on my expereince.

Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) ~ Parking & Hotels

Detroit Metro Airport (DTW)

We always seem to have early flights out of Detroit, so we go down the night before and stay the night.  The last several times we have stayed at the Fairfield Inn, which is part of the Marriott chain.  A double room runs about $100 a night, and they do have Park & Fly packages that include 8 days of parking.  If you are staying for a longer stay, the parking alone makes this a good deal.  The hotel has a 24 hour pool and hot tub and offers breakfast from 4am to 9am.  The rooms are newer, clean and pretty much what you would expect from a Marriott.  I have always been pleased with our stays here.

One of the reason I like the Fairfield is that it is next to the Qwik Park, which is my favorite parking place.  There are others, but we tried this the first time we flew, it was great, and we never saw a reason to look elsewhere.   The Fairfield shares a drive with the Quik Park (with a LaQuinta on the other side).   They have a fleet of shuttle buses that get you over to the airport (which takes about 10 minutes), and when we return the red buses are always right there waiting to take us back.  Cost for parking is $9 per day, and they do base it on a 24 hour perior rather than midnight… which is nice for those late return flights.   Sometimes they have coupons on their website, or occasionally we receive one with the local coupon flyers.

Metro has opened their new North Terminal, which is where many domestic flights (including Spirit) fly from.  They do have a larger security check points, and it did seem easier to get through.  The terminal has various shops and resturants, but on our early flight out (5am), and late return (midnight)  I noticed that most of them were closed.  Over all it is like every other airport, over priced stuff and a lot of people waiting around.  DTW is a large airport, sometimes I don’t realize how large until you fly into a smaller one (like MYR).  The McNamara Terminal is a whole world unto itself.  It is over a mile long and they have their own monorail to help you get around. I have not flown out of there.. you are on your own.

Hilton Garden Inn – DTW

31800 Smith Road, Romulus, Michigan, USA 48174
Our next adventure was to NYC, so drove to Romulus the night before our flight and stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn.  The hotel has a pool and hot tub, and the stay was pleasant.  The room is identical to the one we had in Chicago in September.  The room looked out over the Qwik Park lot, which is right around the corner.    They offer Park & Fly packages, but since we were only going for the weekend, and I had a coupon for Qwik Park it was cheaper to do them separately.  This is everything you want in a hotel that is near the airport.

Show map of 1803 S Ocean Blvd, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577

For our stay in Myrtle beach I selected the Hampton Inn on the Ocean.  I am becoming a big fan of the Hampton chain, they offer nice rooms at good prices.   Our suite here was amazing, and the hotel is right on the beach.  When you walk in the room there is a full kitchen, stove, micro, sink, fridge, dishwasher, and a counter with 4 chairs.  In the cupboards you find everything you need to cook a meal.   The rest of the main room is about 20×10 and has a couch, several chairs lots of tables and lamps, and in the corner a TV w/ DVD player.  The room walks out on to a balcony with 2 rocking chair for a wonderful view of the ocean.    To the left side are 2 separate bed rooms.  The ‘kids’ room had a bunk bed and a queen sized bed with a dresser and TV.  The main bedroom had a queen bed with a Armour cabinet with TV and storage.  The bedroom had a sliding door but no balcony.  At night we left the door open a bit to hear the waves, and it was great to wake up and see the sun rising on the ocean.  In between the bedrooms was a large bath room with both tub and stand up shower.

The hotel had a nautical theme, the room included breakfast which offered the typical items.  One thing I appreciate about the Hampton chain is they change their hot breakfast item each day.  The hotel had an indoor pool and large hot tub.  They also had an outside pool, but was closed for construction.   Walking out from the pools you go out onto the beach.

The hotel did seem a bit worn in places, but over all was well kept up and clean.  Basically the hotel is doubling in size.  there were workman about but no noise etc.  You can see where they are putting in a new kids pool and lazy river by the new part of the building.   So soon you will have a 1 in 2 chance of getting a new room.  The hotel has a free parking ramp attached to it and the people were very friendly and helpful.  This was a wonderful stay and we would highly recommend it for price, location and services.
